Overview
This 39-hour program provides comprehensive training on managing disasters specifically in the context of pandemics, such as COVID-19 or future outbreaks. It is designed for young adults, emphasizing practical skills, ethical considerations, and community involvement. The curriculum draws from established disaster health competencies and public health frameworks, adapted for an engaging, hands-on format. The program can be delivered in-person, online, or hybrid, over 13 weeks (3 hours per week) or as an intensive 2-week workshop (about 3 hours per day, with breaks). No prerequisites are required, but basic knowledge of biology or health sciences is beneficial.
Key components include theoretical lessons, case studies, group activities, and simulations. The focus is on the four phases of disaster management—preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation—tailored to pandemic scenarios, incorporating cultural, legal, and ethical aspects.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the program, participants will be able to:
- Explain the key concepts of disaster management and how pandemics differ from other disasters in terms of spread, impact, and response needs.
- Develop personal, family, and community preparedness plans for pandemic outbreaks, including risk assessment and resource allocation.
- Demonstrate effective communication and situational awareness during simulated pandemic response scenarios.
- Apply public health principles, such as surveillance and surge capacity management, to mitigate pandemic effects on healthcare systems.
- Analyze ethical, legal, and cultural considerations in pandemic recovery, ensuring equitable support for diverse communities.
- Evaluate real-world case studies (e.g., COVID-19 responses) to identify best practices and lessons learned for future pandemics.
- Design and implement basic mitigation strategies to build resilience against recurring or evolving pandemic threats.
